A Race Against Time

by Begin Again

After a grueling day at work, Jenna wanted nothing more than to soak her aching body in a relaxing bubble bath. Removing her high heels, she tossed her suit jacket across the chair and started upstairs. She had climbed about eight steps when she heard the telephone ring. She wanted to ignore it, but it might be Steve, her fiance, so she started back down.

The answering machine switched on before she could reach the telephone. A woman's voice started talking, "Steve, it's me. It's urgent that we meet. I'll be at our place at 4 o'clock." The connection went dead.

Jenna hit the replay button and listened. She didn't recognize the voice and she didn't like its implications. What did she mean "our place" and what could be so urgent? She listened to the message again.

This had to be a mistake, a wrong number, but the voice had asked for Steve. Could it be a mere coincidence?

Jenna picked up the phone and dialed Steve's work number. His direct line rang and rang before clicking over to his secretary.

"Mason, Williams & Shaw. Jill speaking. How may I help you?"

"Hi, Jill. This is Jenna. Is Steve busy with a client?"

"Hi, Jenna. Steve left about an hour ago. Did you try his cell?"

Now Jenna was confused. Steve had told her he had to work late on a deposition. How could he be gone? Where was he?

"Jenna, is everything okay?"

"Of course! I'll try his cell. Thanks Jill. Have a nice weekend."

"You too! Bye, Jenna."

Jenna dialed Steve's cell phone and waited. She could hear his voice instructing the caller to leave a name and number. She hung up the phone.

As Jenna was about to listen to the message again, the doorbell rang. Through the glass window, she could see a delivery girl with an envelope. Jenna opened the door, signed the clipboard and accepted the 8x11 envelope addressed to Jenna Anderson, 2323 Raven Street, Jacksonville, Florida. There was no return address.

Anxiety was overshadowing Jenna's fatigue. Her hands were clammy. Her throat was tight. Her heart was pounding. What was in the envelope? Who had sent it?

Tearing it open, two glossy photos slid from the envelope. Biting her lip, she stared in disbelief. There was Steve, her Steve, passionately kissing a brunette in a string bikini. Jenna couldn't see her face, but it didn't really matter. What mattered was Steve!

A note was attached to the photos. It simply read - Got your attention? Check out 1810 Melody Lane. Better hurry!

Jenna couldn't believe what was happening. It didn't make sense. They were happy. They loved each other. There had to be an explanation.

Checking her watch, she could see that it was 3:15. The woman's voice had asked to meet Steve at 4 o'clock. Where? At 1810 Melody Lane?

Staring at the pictures, Jenna made her decision. Could she make it across town in forty-five minutes? Traffic would be heavy. It would be a race against time. A race she knew she wanted to win!

3:23 - Hailing a cab, Jenna gave the driver the address, stressing that it was imperative to get there as quickly as possible. Sensing his lack of concern, she offered him an extra twenty dollars to get there in thirty minutes. The driver flashed Jenna a smile and advised her to fasten her seat belt. Like a rocket, they were off!

3:52 - A bus and a mini van had locked bumpers near First and Main, six blocks from her destination. Traffic was gridlocked. Time was running out. Jenna shoved two twenties at the driver and exited the cab. She'd decided to finish the race on foot.

3:58 - Her heart was pounding against her chest, part from running and part from fear. Checking the house numbers, she knew that she was only a few doors away. When her eyes caught sight of Steve's car parked in the driveway, she froze. She wasn't sure she could cross the finish line. She could still change her mind. It was all circumstantial evidence. How could she doubt the man she loved?

3:59 - It was now or never! The race was almost over. Jenna climbed the stairs to the house. The door was open and she could hear muffled voices. Should she just walk in or should she knock and ask for Steve? Time was running out, Jenna had to make a decision - now.

4:00 - Opening the door, she stepped into the house. Holding her breath, she walked into the front room and abruptly stopped.

"Surprise!" echoed from family and friends around the room.

Wrapping his arms tightly around her, Steve gave his fiance a birthday kiss.
